Junior Leo Underhill goes to school at New Castle High School. Underhill was awarded the junior crest at the honors ceremony for his hard work in school. Underhill plays tennis for the school and has been playing for six years. Underhill was a manager for the track team last year. Underhill started because his friends were doing it and he played with his brother and thought it was fun. Underhill also plays golf, basketball, tennis and pickleball for fun. Underhill says, ”Tennis is like a chess match; it’s all about strengths and weaknesses.”
Tennis is a challenging sport that requires a lot of strategy. Underhill says, “If you know you’re better than your opponent you can beat them and even if you know they’re better than you, you can still pull off a win.”
One of Underhill’s memories while playing the sport was winning regionals which was the first time our school has won regionals. Underhill plans to win regionals again this year like last year. Underhill says as he’s moved up to higher levels of playing tennis as he has improved and his opponents have gotten better. During the off-season he takes tennis lessons and plays with tennis clubs to get some time to play and practice. Underhill says, “His coaches are there when he needs help and they are very helpful.” Underhill wants to go to college after high school and after college to get a job.
Underhill’s favorite food is mac and cheese. Underhill would rather lose his sight than his memories because he can always make more memories. If Underhill had a million dollars, Underhill would buy a lot of food, buy a car, and save the rest of the money.
Go see Underhill at the next home tennis match on September 21 against Cambridge City Lincoln High School.
