Junior Kattie Mathews is a student and softball player at New Castle High School. Mathews also plays basketball for New Castle. Softball is a sport that is played in the spring but you can also play it during the other seasons for travel teams. Softball is similar to baseball but many people will argue that it is harder and not close to being the same. Some of the differences in softball and baseball are that baseball players pitch overhand and softball players pitch underhand, softball uses a bigger ball than baseball, softball fields are smaller than baseball fields, baseball uses bigger bats, and softball games are seven innings but baseball has nine innings.

On defense Mathews plays short stop which is the position that plays between second base and third base. Mathews has played sixty six games for the varsity softball team throughout her career. Her batting average is a .476. Mathews OBP or on-base percentage is a .547. She has one hundred and one hits which hits are counted every time you hit the ball and do not get out at first. She has thirty two RBI which means runs batted in. Mathews has eighty one runs which is touching home plate and not getting out. She has a .892 FP or field percentage. Mathews leads the team in batting average, on base percentage, home runs, stolen bases, runs, hits, slugging percentage, and triples. The softball team is two and twelve on the season and zero and four in conference matches. They are ranked two hundred and sixty ninth in the state of Indiana, ranked eightieth in the 4A division, and one hundred and eleventh in the Indianapolis rankings. They are eighth in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Mathews has been playing softball since she was in middle school. Mathews has made many memories from softball like playing with her friends and winning games with her teammates. Mathews won thirteen games her freshman year nine games her sophomore year and three games this year which is her junior year. The softball team has many more games to play this year and has sectionals coming up. The softball team pulled Centerville for the first round of sectionals.

The softball team’s next game is May 14th it is home versus the Pendleton Heights Arabians at 5:30 PM it is a conference game so it should be a good game. Show up and be loud and cheer on your New Castle Trojans.
