Sophomore Owen Barrett is a student and an athlete of many sports. He plays football, soccer, swims, and runs track. Track is a sport that has many events combined into one sport. The events in track for guys include the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, 800 meter, 1600 meter or the mile, 3200 meter or the 2 mile, 4 by 100 meter relay, 4 by 400 meter relay, 4 by 800 meter relay, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and discus. Barrett does pole vault, the 4 by 100 meter relay, and long jump.
Pole vault is an event that you are holding a very long and flexible pole and use that pole to get over a bar that is above you by however many feet it’s set to. The 4 by 100 meter relay is an event that uses 4 people which are each stationed at every 100 meters on the track and you must hand off a baton to the next person in front of you in a certain section of the track or you get disqualified. Long jump is an event where there is a strip of track that you run on and must jump off a long jump board into a pit of sand and try and get the furthest you can get before you hit the ground.
Barrett has made many memories from track at New Castle which were making new friends at every meet and trying new events and liking them. Barrett’s personal records include nine foot six inches in pole vault which he got at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet. He jumped seventeen feet five inches in long jump at the conference meet. The four by one hundred meter relay team which included Barrett, Leondre walker, Wezlee Brown, and Isaac Nunn. They ran a fifty five second time for the four by one hundred meter. Barrett also ran the mile once this year which he ran in six minutes and nine seconds.
Barrett has improved a lot since last year. He jumped sixteen feet and five inches in long jump which he has now beaten by a foot. He has beaten his personal record in pole vault by one foot and six inches since last year. Barrett placed seventh in sectionals in pole vault vaulting 9 feet. He placed fourteenth in long jump jumping sixteen feet three inches. Barrett sadly did not make it to regionals but the boys track team had one vaulter make it to regionals which was Caden Johnson. The boys track team had a great year.
