It’s that time of the year again! Election season is just around the corner and everybody knows what that means. Countless cases of politicians lying, numerous insults coming from candidates, and issues being brought up that we all know will not get fixed. Election season is a great way to get informed about why and how to vote this year, but as politics become more and more focused around insults and why the other candidates are wrong, it is also a great time to sit back and watch the chaos unfold.

The biggest issue in this upcoming election is immigration. Immigration has been the main topic of discussion for presidential candidates for the last decade. One of the biggest issues to run on for president has been immigration, however most politicians seem to ignore it once they become president. Many Americans are concerned with immigration, this is due to the fact that immigrants are taking jobs and committing violent crimes. While a select few of immigrants may commit crimes, people often forget that the backbone of the United States was built on immigration.

Sophomore Brinklee Curtis said, “I think that immigration is the most important issue, a good portion of the immigrants who come to America are often worse off because they do not have a guaranteed job, or a family to rely on.” Curtis brings up a good point as many of the migrants that come to the United States often travel alone and without support.

The next topic that is an integral part of the 2024 election is the economy. Every American relies on the economy, whether that be for basic necessities such as food and water, or people being able to afford a home. Every year people from both parties Democratic and Republican vote purely based on the state of the economy in the last 4 years. By no means is this a bad way of voting, but people should also focus on the plethora of other policies.

Geography teacher Gabe Haworth said, “I believe the economy is the biggest issue because the candidates are so far apart in their methods of fixing the economy. I feel that one candidate has the potential to harm the country with their economic plan instead of fixing it.” Many Americans also feel this way and think that the economy is crucial in this election.

Abortion is a subject that is very sensitive and has received a lot of controversy in recent years. People are on the fence about this topic because people think that they should have the right to their own body. The opposing group argues that abortion is wrong and should be banned no matter the circumstance.

Parents, students, and teachers all around the world are horrified about gun control. Shootings are becoming more prominent all across America, this makes people scared to even leave their house. America is a country that is built on the ideology of freedom and the ability to keep its citizens safe. While some people disagree with owning guns entirely, others think that owning guns is a constitutional right and should not be infringed upon.

The final major issue in this election is the ongoing climate crisis. Undoubtedly, the Earth is heating up, the release of greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions has skyrocketed in the last few decades. The facts are crystal clear, yet for some reasons politicians keep neglecting the issue which will inevitably lead to the Earth being uninhabitable.

Senior Vincent Salerno said, “I feel that other choices are debated too much, however climate change is an issue that is much easier to get more support from people.” This statement could not be more true, most Americans will never come to a singular agreement about certain topics, but climate change is something that will affect everyone.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that election season is not a season of hate and anger. It should be viewed as a time to come together and vote based on significant issues plaguing our country. Always remember to be kind to individuals no matter their vote, and to be mindful of their opinions.
