With winter break approaching, some of us might be looking forward to getting some fresh air as we escape our stuffy classrooms for two weeks. While you definitely should stay active during break, this weekend, it’s safer to stay inside.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the negatives three days in a row, and on Christmas Eve, they’ll be a frigid -1℉ before windchill. While you’ll surely be crammed in a house with all of the extended family members you’ve ever known, it’s not a great idea to step outside. With wind chills approaching -10℉, it’ll take less than half an hour of outside exposure to get permanent frostbite, not the ideal Christmas present.

If you have to drive somewhere this weekend, make sure to bring a coat in your car with you and wear pants. Breaking down on Christmas day could mean abnormally long wait times because, well, no one works on Christmas. It’s better to be safe than sorry and freezing.

So if you can’t go out, what can you do? I know what I’ll be doing: relaxing on my couch with the rest of my family watching some Christmas day football games. If football’s not your thing, break out the hot chocolate and the cards. Take advantage of break and relax; January 5th will be here before you know it.
