Junior Kyla Abbott is a student and gymnast at New Castle High School. Gymnastics is a sport that is done in the winter season. Gymnastics is a good way to stay active over the winter when you can do nothing outside because of it being cold and having snow on the ground. Abbott has been doing gymnastics since the young age of 3. Abbott got interested in gymnastics from watching the Olympics. She likes gymnastics because it keeps her active and doing something. Abbott has made many friends through gymnastics. Abbott says, “Doing gymnastics for the school has helped me improve my skills like getting back hand springs on beam, kips on bars, and big tumbling on floor.” Abbott tries to run outside while she is not in the gymnastics season to keep her body going.

Abbott’s goals for this year is she wants to compete for gymnastics all around after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament or most commonly known as the acl. Tearing your acl is a long recovery process and can take six to nine months. Abbott says this about her coaches, ” They push you to get better and they don’t let you slack off.” After Abbott graduates from high school she wants to go to Ivy Tech to become an athletic trainer. Athletic training is a job that is supposed to help athletes prevent athletes from getting injured, help diagnosing injuries, treat and help in the rehabilitation process of an injury, and help with first aid and medical issues.

Gymnastics practice is about two hours long so Abbott gets all her school work done in school and if she has any extra work she goes home after gymnastics practice and finishes it all up. Abbott’s teammates help her stay motivated by constantly getting in her face and say motivating words. Abbott thinks her biggest accomplishment of this year is coming back from her acl tear and being better this year than she was last year. Abbott does all the events for gymnastics which includes vault, bars, beam, and floor. The gymnastics team did well in sectionals placing third out of fourteen schools and got to move onto regionals, but sadly got 6th and scoring ninety seven point one five at regionals as a team so they did not get to move on from regionals. The team had a good season and had a good run into the post season of gymnastics.
