Colten Lawson is a senior at New Castle High School. Lawson does RHB or the red hot blues which is the name of New Castle’s show choir he also used to run track in the spring after the show choir season is over. This year he did not participate in track this year which gives him more time to do other activities. Lawson has been in the red hot blues for 4 years. Lawson has won many awards this year for best soloists. Lawson is also a part of jazz choir, barbershop, and theater.

Lawson is a bass in choir which means the lowest adult male singing voice. This year Lawson is the bass vocal captain. He plans to attend Ball State University after high school to study exercise science. Exercise science is a major that studies the movement and the associated functional responses and adaptations. The goal of exercise science is to understand how fitness, exercise, diet, and health are linked together. Lawson says his favorite RHB moment is either winning solo comp or singing/screaming sea shanties in the Bundy bathroom his freshman year. His advice for underclassmen is don’t take this time of your life for granted; however also don’t dwell on it too much, you have so much more life to live. Lawson has done a lot and put a lot of time and effort into the New Castle choir group and we are thankful to have him in the choir department.

RHB has had a great season this year and has won many awards. RHB won grand champs at East Noble getting best vocals, best choreography, best bass soloist being Colten Lawson, best treble soloist being Isabel Wright. They also won grand champs at the Ball State Mid-American show choir championship winning best vocals again and best choreography, and peoples choice. At Ben Davis Giant Spectacular they got grand champs again making it their third grand champs of the year winning best vocal and best choreography. They also got third at the Carroll Classic, second place at Avon Vocal Invitational winning best choreography and best bass soloist being Colten Lawson, Second place at Lawrence Central the Classic. RHB had the great success of being able to go to state this year and they placed fifth it’s not what they wanted but it’s still a big achievement for them and the school. The Red Hot Blues also got fourth in the state last year.
